We have moved our car from Montana to LA without any problems using Axis Auto Logistics. It was a tough decision to choose someone who just stepped on the market but the experience was very good and I would definitely recommend Axis at any time if you need your vehicle shipped. The communication was perfect, the support both on the phone and chat were really polite. Our car was picked up without any issues and delivered sooner than expected. The price was reasonable. Recommend with both hands!

Snowbird Car Transport: The Seasonal Migration in the U.S.

For many Americans, the snowbird phenomenon happens every year. It’s a seasonal rite of passage and part of their yearly routine, as people leave a cold, snowy locale like New England or the upper Midwest and make their way south to Florida, the Gulf Coast, Texas or other warm, sunny parts of the country to spend the winter months there. Typically, snowbirds are in their winter homes from about late October until early to mid April, when it’s time to turn around and go back to their permanent residences again.

Even if you’re just relocating seasonally, there are a lot of loose ends and details to take care of, and getting your vehicle to your winter haven is going to be one of them. In these next few sections, we’re going to talk about vehicle transport for snowbirds and how it can take one of those details off the table completely for you.

The Appeal of Florida for Snowbirds

The Appeal of Florida for Snowbirds

Perfect Weather for Outdoor Activities

Doesn’t a sunny, pristine beach, an ocean breeze and clear ocean waters sound better than spending winter in subfreezing weather and having to deal with ice, several inches of snow, slick and treacherous roads and sky-high heating bills? Florida is the perfect place for fishing, swimming, sports, camping, cycling and every other kind of outdoor fun you can think of, while people’s teeth are chattering and they’re bundling up against the cold in other parts of the country.

Snowbird Car Shipping Options: Modes of Transport

Snowbird Car Shipping Options: Modes of Transport

There are a few different ways of getting a vehicle from point A to point B, and they can all be customized to your vehicle, your budget and your expectations. Overview of Car Shipping Modes for Snowbirds.

Open Car Transport

The most popular option with our customers is open car transport. Everyone’s seen the big double-decker tractor-trailers that deliver new cars to dealerships, and that’s what open car transport is. Your car shares the trip with several others to be picked up or delivered along the transport driver’s route. It does have the disadvantage of leaving your car exposed to weather and road grit, but you can reserve an upper deck spot for your vehicle to minimize that exposure. Best of all, it’s the most budget-friendly transport method you can find.

Factors Affecting Snowbird Car Transport Price

It’s hard to give a general price quote for auto transport without taking into account some of the things that influence cost structure for logistics.

1

Distance

It’s just a given that the farther something has to be transported, the more it’s going to cost. The good news is that for very long distances, the cost/mile ratio starts to drop and cross-country transport becomes a pretty solid value.

2

Vehicle year/make/model:

If something is bigger and heavier, it takes up more space on a transport trailer that could be allotted to other cargo, and it costs more in fuel and wear and tear on the transport truck for every mile it’s hauled. That’s why a full size truck like an F150 or a vintage Cadillac will cost a lot more to transport than a Fiat 500 or a Mini Cooper.

3

Seasonality

There are times of the year when the demand for car shipping goes up and more transport trucks are on the road answering customer needs. When the supply/demand ratio tilts in favor of the demand side, rates will necessarily go up a bit until things slow down.

4

Location

It’s actually less expensive to ship a vehicle from one city to another than to or from a remote rural area or a small town. Why? The Interstate highway system is streamlined and designed for efficient connection of major population centers, but getting to a small rural town means hours of driving on 2-lane state or county roads and more miles for the transport driver.

Door-to-Door Service

Remember what we were saying about everything that has to get taken care of as part of relocation during snowbird season? Door-to-door service is designed for your convenience. There’s no need to go to a freight terminal or truck depot to connect with the transport driver or pick up your car at the destination. We come directly to your curbside address at the time and date you specify, and your car will be delivered curbside at the destination at the predetermined time and date.

Enclosed Car Transport

For rare classics, delicate antiques and high-dollar luxury cars that call for an extra level of protection and security en route, there’s enclosed transport. With enclosed transport, your car is loaded into a closed trailer with aluminum or tarp sides and then locked in for its trip, so it’s protected on all four sides and concealed from curious onlookers. Enclosed transport is recommended for lowriders, supercars, exotics and any other vehicle with very low ride height. Enclosed transport is a little more scarce, and does come at a premium rate.

Why Choose Snowbird Car Transport? Snowbird Transport: Is It Worth It?

Benefits of Snowbird Car Transport:

1

Convenience and Time Savings

A drive from New York City to Miami is over 1200 miles, the kind of drive that involves about 19 or 20 hours on the road. Not many people are willing to make a drive like that in one go, and even with an overnight stay it would be an exhausting trip. Auto transport saves all that time, time which could be spent doing things that are a lot more fun and productive.

2

Enhanced Safety

Taking a vehicle on the road, even if it’s just a trip across town, always carries a certain element of risk. Auto transport eliminates the risk factor.

3

Cost Savings Compared to Driving or Renting

Think back to our NYC to Miami example mentioned above - depending on what kind of vehicle you’re driving, that could mean anywhere from $150 to $300 just in fuel costs. That’s not counting meals and an overnight stay along the way and your own investment of time…and only you know what your time is worth.

4

Reduced Vehicle Wear and Tear

A vehicle is a depreciating asset to start with, so why would you want to put more miles and wear on it when you don’t have to? Vehicle transport is the perfect way around that dilemma.

5

Stress-Free Relocation

Securing your house for the winter, getting everything set up in your winter home, having mail forwarded, etc - think of all the details that go into relocation as a snowbird. Having your car shipped to you is a great way to take one big detail off your plate completely.

How to Choose the Best Snowbird Car Transport Company

These are all things to look for when you’re shopping for the right car shipping company:

Research

Find out about their credentials and permits, including DOT certification and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration number. These are essentials for any transport company that’s doing business between states.

Insurance

A reputable carrier will have comprehensive carrier insurance for vehicles that are in transit. Ask about coverage levels and deductibles as well as other specifics of the coverage.

Various Shipping Options

A good auto transport service will have a few different options available to cater to customer needs. Does the company offer door-to-door service (as mentioned earlier)?

Reputation

Check the company’s online reviews on review sites to find out what customers have to say about their experiences.

Security

At the very least, open transport and enclosed transport should be available for different levels of security.

Tracking

While real-time tracking isn’t available through most shipping services (as yet), it shouldn’t be a problem to ask for regular updates from customer support.

Customer Support

Communication with customer support should be responsive and helpful, and all the wording on the company site should be clear, complete and informative.

The Car Shipping Process: Step-by-Step

  • Most auto transport companies have bypassed the lengthy call to customer service for price quotes and now offer an easy-to-use quote calculator that can deliver an accurate quote in just a few seconds. From there, you can enter your information into the system and book your order.

  • You’ll include the desired timeframe in the quote calculator information, and the dispatch department will assign your order to a driver for routing.

  • At your predetermined time and date, the transport driver will arrive curbside at your location to load and secure your vehicle for the road. You and the driver will each complete a pre-trip inspection of the car’s condition for the Bill of Lading report (you will repeat this inspection after the trip).

  • You can feel free to contact the customer support team of the shipping company for updates on the driver’s progress - they’ll contact him and get back to you, and you can ask for regular updates if desired.

  • On delivery, you and the driver will both do a post-trip inspection. It’s suggested that you include a few photos to document your car’s condition - if you notice any damage after signing the Bill of Lading, it could be difficult to make a claim. You can settle any outstanding amount directly with the driver (if needed), and you can then take possession of your car again.

Tips for Saving Money on Snowbird Car Shipping

Most vehicle logistics companies ask for at least two weeks’ lead time to line up the details of your shipment and assign it to a transport driver. Expedited shipping is available for short-notice orders, but it will come at an enhanced cost.

1

Convenience and Time Savings

If it’s possible to have some wiggle room on your timeframe, it could save you money and make it easier for the shipping company to arrange things

The Seasonal Impact of Snowbird Citizens' Migrations in the U.S.

Cultural Vibrancy During Snowbird Season

It’s estimated that during snowbird season, Florida’s population swells by 1 to 4 million people. That accounts for a 5% to 7% spike in the state’s population, which is of course a huge boon to Florida’s economy. More than that, though, that influx of people from out of state brings a richness to life in cities like Naples, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Cape Coral that you won’t find in a lot of places. It’s still Florida, make no mistake, but it’s also influenced by places like New York and Boston, with food, music and nightlife that have a real vibrancy to them.

Health and Wellness Benefits of Snowbirding:

Many people find winter a tough time of year, for all kinds of reasons. Just dealing with snow shoveling, slick roads and gloomy skies is hard enough, not to mention having to bundle up with multiple layers of clothes every time you leave the house. It’s not surprising that people would prefer to trade that for sunlight and vitamin D, physical activity in the outdoors and warmer temperatures that can help relieve joint pain. Meeting like-minded individuals in their winter homes and taking in new experiences can also have a marked improvement in cognition and mood.

Economic Impact of Snowbirds on Florida. Contributions to Local Economy:

Restaurants, bars, grocery stores, movie theaters and service providers all see a yearly boom from snowbirds, along with every business that caters to recreational activities like golfing, cycling, hiking, boating, etc. That money that gets pumped into the local economies puts people to work as a rising tide lifts all boats.

Real Estate Trends: Rentals vs. Purchases:

While renting an apartment or house makes sense for a lot of snowbirds, there are people who see their winter homes as an investment and end up purchasing a condo or house. It’s all up to the snowbird, and for many of them that real estate investment just makes good sense.

Long-term Rentals vs. Month-to-Month Rates

While one-year leases are the norm in the apartment industry, the nature of snowbird residencies means that a lot of landlords are willing to lease on a month-to-month basis.

Impact on Hospitality and Service Industries:

The hotel, restaurant and service industries all account for a big part of Florida’s workforce and economy, and they all definitely get a big boost in the winter months as snowbirds come to escape their cold and snowy homes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Snowbird Car Transport:

Open car transport is always going to be the most affordable way to manage your auto transport needs.

What do snowbirds do for a car?

It doesn’t make sense to buy a car or leave a different car in Florida or Texas when you can have your car transported there and then home again in the spring.

What is the safest way to transport a car?

For the best level of protection and security, enclosed car transport is available (at enhanced cost).
