Transporting Inoperable Vehicles
Did you know that Axis Auto Logistix will transport vehicles that can’t start, run, drive, steer and stop on their own power? In some instances, it could be a vehicle that’s being used for parts. Or, if a customer has a rare antique or classic car that’s being restored, parts and service could be a real issue and the vehicle might need to go to a specialized shop or mechanic in some other part of the country.
Our customers have all kinds of reasons for transporting a non-running vehicle, and that’s one of the services we offer to help them with their auto logistics needs

What is Salvaged or an Inoperable Vehicle?
A salvage or inoperable vehicle could be one that’s sustained significant body and frame damage in a collision and is only good for parts, but not necessarily. In many cases, it just means a vehicle that has electrical or drivetrain problems and can’t be started and driven on its own power. In legal terms, vehicles that have been written off as a total loss by the insurance company will have a salvage title and can’t legally be driven on the roads until they’ve been restored and issued a “rebuilt” title.
How to Transport a Non-Running Car
If the vehicle still has inflated tires and can roll, it can be loaded onto the transport trailer with an electric winch, using a heavy cable or chain. If it can’t roll, loading will generally involve a forklift or a dolly (in some cases), then the vehicle will have to be specially strapped down and secured for transport. Transporting non-running cars means a more complex and time-consuming process, and requires special procedures on the part of the driver (who needs to be trained and experienced in this kind of transport).
How to Ship a Salvage Car
Shipping a salvage vehicle or inoperable vehicle does mean a special process and special equipment to do the job safely and efficiently. For shorter distances, some transport companies might use a flatbed truck with a tilting bed, known as a “HydraTail”. These beds lift hydraulically to about a 30 degree angle to make it simpler to winch the vehicle onto the bed. For longer distances, transport trailers with a winch are generally used. Heavy-duty straps and/or chains are then used to tightly secure the vehicle for the road.

How Much Does Non-Running Vehicle Transport Cost?
Due to the special equipment that’s involved and the need for qualified operators to handle the inoperable car and secure it for transport, shipping a non-running vehicle does come at an enhanced cost. That’s why it’s important that we know about the situation in advance, at the time you’re setting up your transport order. What is the Salvage Car Title Transfer Process?
Details of transfer of title for salvage vehicles can vary from state to state, but it’s safe to say that, in general, the right forms and paperwork need to be completed and signed, then submitted to the local county tax office along with any required fees and proof of ownership. If the vehicle is going to be repaired and put back on the road, it will need a rebuilt title. Before the application for rebuilt title can be submitted, the repaired vehicle will need to pass a safety inspection (possibly with your state’s highway patrol). Most states require the vehicle to be re-titled within 30 days of sale, or delinquent transfer fees might be applied. For the vehicle to be registered and driven, proof of insurance will also be required.
